Why the First Visit Sets the Tone for Life
Dental anxiety most often begins in childhood. If the first experience is painful or frightening, that reaction can last a lifetime. At iDent we never rush: a child's first contact with the dental chair should be interesting rather than stressful. That is why we offer a dedicated adaptation visit — the child simply explores the room and meets the team, with no procedures at all.
How to Prepare Your Child at Home
Parents play a critical role in shaping how a child feels about the dentist. A few things that genuinely help:
- Never use the dentist as a threat ("If you don't brush, the dentist will drill").
- Read friendly books about teeth and doctors — normalise the topic early.
- Do not share your own negative dental experiences before the appointment.
- Schedule morning appointments when the child is rested and in a good mood.
- Bring a favourite toy — it can "visit the dentist too".
- Praise your child after the visit — but do not reward with sweets.
- Trust the dentist: children sense parental anxiety immediately.
What Children Experience at iDent
Paediatric dentistry at our clinic is not simply a smaller version of the adult surgery. We speak to children in their own language, explain every step and never hurry. The initial paediatric consultation is free. Psychological preparation of a young patient for treatment costs UAH 500.
I always tell parents: your mood transfers to your child instantly. If you walk into the room calmly and with a smile, your child calms down with you. My goal is to make sure that after the first visit the child asks: "When are we going back to the tooth doctor?" That is the reaction I consider a success.

When to Start Bringing Your Child to the Dentist
The first check-up is recommended when the first milk teeth appear — around twelve months of age. This is not too early: the dentist will assess bite development, show parents how to clean a baby's teeth properly and advise on caries prevention. Regular preventive visits every 3–6 months are the best way to avoid pain and larger expenses later.
