A crown fully encases the tooth and protects it from further breakdown. Modern materials — metal-ceramic, CAD/CAM and zirconia — provide a natural appearance and long service life. First consultation is free.
Book a consultationA dental crown is a fixed prosthetic restoration that completely covers the visible portion of a tooth. It is prescribed when a tooth has been destroyed by more than 50% and a filling can no longer adequately restore its shape and function. A crown restores masticatory load-bearing capacity, protects root canals after endodontic treatment and returns the tooth to a natural aesthetic appearance.
At iDent we offer several crown options depending on the clinical situation and patient preferences. For the anterior zone, CAD/CAM or all-ceramic restorations are appropriate — they are indistinguishable from natural teeth. For posterior teeth under heavy load, metal-ceramic or zirconia crowns are used. Digital diagnostics are performed before treatment; in complex cases a CT scan on the PaX-i3D Smart is taken.
The clinician examines the tooth and, where indicated, orders X-rays or a CT scan. If endodontic treatment is needed it is completed first. For severely broken-down teeth a composite build-up core is fabricated to provide a reliable foundation for the crown.
The clinician prepares the tooth under anaesthesia, reducing it circumferentially by the crown wall thickness. A precise C-silicone impression or digital scan is taken and sent to the laboratory.
While the laboratory produces the permanent crown (usually 5–10 working days), a temporary acrylic or CAD/CAM crown is placed. It protects the prepared tooth and allows you to preview the final shape.
At the next visit the clinician checks the fit, occlusion and appearance. Once the patient approves, the crown is cemented with a permanent adhesive. The result is immediately functional and aesthetic.
Crown longevity depends on the material, the quality of tooth preparation and home oral hygiene. Metal-ceramic crowns last an average of 10–15 years; zirconia crowns 15–20 years or more. A properly made and well-maintained crown is indistinguishable from a natural tooth both visually and functionally.
After the permanent crown is cemented, routine maintenance is all that is required — twice-daily brushing, an oral irrigator and a professional check-up every 6 months. For implant-supported crowns, technical servicing of the full restoration is planned jointly at your review visits.
Tooth preparation is performed under local anaesthesia — the patient feels nothing. Mild discomfort for 1–2 days afterwards is possible and easily managed. Cementation of the permanent crown is entirely painless.
Typically 5 to 10 working days from the impression. Throughout this time the patient wears a temporary crown that protects the tooth and looks presentable. A CAD/CAM crown can be produced by the laboratory in 2–3 days.
A crown has walls 0.5–1.5 mm thick, so the tooth must be reduced by exactly that amount around its circumference — ensuring the crown does not increase the tooth's size or disturb the bite. Preparation is as conservative as possible and carried out under the protection of anaesthesia.
